  • Replacing disk drive Raid-5, Hotswap

    Updated: 2012-07-30 17:00:46
I have a Poweredge server with a PERC 6i hotswap card that started complaining about a drive about to fail. I replaced the drive with an identical model.<br /In OMSA under "Drives" it shows the drive as ready, but under "Virtual Drive" it shows degraded and only the original two drives assigned. None of the options show anything to make the drive part of the array as a replacement. How do I get it to accept the new drive as a replacement and rebuild the array to protected status? While the system is up, after all we did buy hotswap.

  • Rebuilding a 2950 SAN

    Updated: 2012-07-19 21:46:11
Well, time has come that we are replacing two of our 2950's with R720's to be our new VM hosts. What I'd like to do is recycle one of these 2950's and turn it into a NAS/SAN for use with those VM hosts. I have set one up as a test rig and gotten 2003 x64 storage server back on to the unit. adly it refuses to let me create any kind of LUN or anything else, claiming that the VDS service is unable to find anything usable at a base install.

  • Change RAID 5 to RAID 10

    Updated: 2012-07-13 16:24:34
Hello, I am looking to upgrade a PowerEdge R710 server with a PERC 6/i controller from a RAID 5 setup to a RAID 10 setup. Currently the RAID 5 setup has 3, 300GB SAS drives. I have another drive I plan on adding to the setup. However, I was hoping to avoid a bare metal restore if at all possible. Is it possible to simply add another drive to the system and update the VD with the new drive and change the RAID setup to 10?

Long shot I know but is there any way of doing this without losing data ? Does the array store a config file somewhere on the discs that the card can use to set itself up ?

  • Answer by TheCompWiz for Rebuild Raid 6 Array instructions

    Updated: 2012-07-03 16:48:41
Raid 6 means you have 2 drives that can fail before data-loss. If you removed 1 due to failure... and have 2 more with read-errors... your data is probably corrupted. Whatever method you used to initially build the RAID should also have a tool to rebuild/reassemble the raid with your new disks. Without knowing more details about your hardware, I can't be more specific.

I don't think the hard read errors on the 2 drives can be repaired I wish I could repair one of them , but I don't know how that could be done . Am I correct My question is : Can I power down the server and replace the 2 drives I've already replaced the one drive
